Deputy Manager - Retail - Wyevale Garden Centre - Canterbury

Hours: 39 hours per week

Wyevale is the biggest, best known retailer in the gardening industry employing over 4000 colleagues across the UK. We have strong roots dating back to 1932 and an ambitious change agenda.

We are going through an exciting period of change that will transform the business and our ways of working (technology) through to new initiatives to change the way we conduct and lead our business (people). As such the Deputy Manager role is essential in supporting our garden centres in the new ways of working, ensuring we are putting our people in the right place at the right time so that our customers receive the very best experience and service.

We’re looking for a Deputy Manager that can provide robust, energetic and accountable leadership. Someone who can give support and guidance on best practice across our centres, someone who has outstanding retail standards.

Working alongside your centre team you will:

  • Drive all business initiatives with pace
  • Ensure the delivery of all key measurables (e.g. customer conversion, driving LFL sales growth, effective management of all costs including payroll, trading discount & waste)
  • Provide outstanding levels of service and customer experience by constantly looking at ways of improvement
  • Ensure an amazing customer journey throughout the centre and the delivery of world class visual and model centre standards
  • Encourage customer loyalty through the engagement & promotion of our Garden Club Card.
  • Effectively support in the management of all costs as detailed on the P&L
  • Support, coach, nurture a skilled team to drive key initiatives
  • Ensure all compliance (e.g audit and health & safety) across the centre is in line with policy as well as all operational functions such as goods in, good faith receipting etc
  • Actively promote the garden centre using social media in order to increase footfall and encourage local engagement within the community
  • Develop your team to provide an ’expert’ succession plan for the centre/region. The role of ’expert’ is a successional role to create Deputy Managers and Garden Centre Managers of the future
  • Fully understand the centre teams skillset, to enable cross functional working and identify training requirements
  • Support the engagement, induction and development of all new starters, setting them up for success

Skills and experience required:

  • Passion for all our key business areas – core retail, horticulture, & hospitality, ideally having direct experience working in a leadership operational role
  • Demonstrable ability to lead change using a flexible and engaging, yet structured leadership style
  • Clear understanding of the people impact of change
  • Highly commercial and able to consider the bigger picture
  • Operationally and customer service focussed with the ability to lead by example
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural agility and the ability to build strong networks throughout the centre/region
  • Does not shy away from difficult conversations
