Join our great team! Working within a bustling atmosphere as part of passionate team this role as a Welcome & Service Assistant, plays a core part in providing fantastic customer service.

The role of Welcome & Service Assistant is key to providing a great welcome and excellent customer service at Hill Top and the Beatrix Potter Gallery. You will bring our places to life, sharing enthusiasm for Beatrix Potter and her legacy of conservation in the Lake District. We have several vacancies in the team, with various hours available. We work on a rota basis, and your hours will be given to you in advance. You’ll be part the front facing visitor welcome team, reporting to the Welcome Managers at Hill Top.

What it's like to work here

Hill Top House, part of the South Lakes property portfolio, was the start of Beatrix Potter's life as a farmer and conservationist in the Lake District. A truly international icon, it is open to the public and a very busy small property! The South Lakes portfolio looks after all the National Trust land and property on the western shore of Windermere around Sawrey, Hawkshead, Coniston and Little Langdale. Your main place of work will be at Hill Top house and garden in Near Sawrey and the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead.

What you'll be doing

Hill Top draws visitors from around the world who are passionate about Beatrix Potter, and often have emotional and nostalgic associations with the author and her stories. Through the season the garden comes into bloom and the landscape changes – there is always something new to talk about with visitors. Every day you’ll have the opportunity to share this special place. 
At Hill Top you'll work in various positions: 
  • Visitor Reception, processing admissions, scanning membership cards and orientating visitors. 
  • You will talk to visitors about supporting the National Trust via Gift Aid admissions, membership recruitment and fundraising. 
  • Working in Hill Top house itself alongside our volunteers, answering visitors’ questions about Beatrix Potter and the collection we look after. Helping to bring Beatrix’s iconic stories to life. 
  • Orientating arrivals in the car park and both greeting and saying farewell to visitors in Hill Top’s garden. 
  • Signposting visitors to other National Trust properties and talking to them about the role of the National Trust. 
 At Beatrix Potter Gallery you'll:
  • Welcome visitors to the Gallery, processing admissions, scanning membership cards and orientating visitors. 
  • Talk to visitors about supporting the National Trust via Gift Aid admissions, membership recruitment and fundraising. 
  • Introduce the annually changing exhibition of Beatrix Potter’s original illustrations and answer any visitor questions.


Who we're looking for

  • Can demonstrate an empathetic, understanding and adaptable approach to different people’s needs, with a passion to deliver the highest standards of customer care.
  • Proven experience of working to measurable targets
  • Good team worker- flexible and adaptable and willing to grow experience and skillset across several different operation aspects of the property
  • Skilled listener with great people skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Well organised and able to work with minimum supervision
